Radhanath Swami learns from Srila Prabhupada

Radhanath-SwamiOnce Srila Prabhupada was in New Vrindavan for a special Srimad Bhagavatam discourse. And it was decided that he would stay back for Janmastami festival. At the time Radhanath Swami thought that he would help Srila Prabhupada in whatever services required and then will go back to Vrindavan, India. He explains that there was great great enthusiasm in all devotees to prepare for Srila Prabhupad’s arrival.Radhanath Swami was helping the devotees in various services. The morning before Srila Prabhupada (i.e. at night) would come, the devotees discovered that the toilet which Srila Prabhupada was supposed to use did not work. Almost all the devotees were resting and Radhanath Swami was the only one left to fix the toilet. He had no experience in fixing one. He did all the things to fix the toilet. The problem with the toilet was it wouldn’t flush. He was up all the night trying to fix it. And finally in the morning when Srila Prabhupada was just arriving, the toilet flushed. THE TOILET WAS FIXED. He was happy that now Srila Prabhupad has a toilet which will flush. And he was proud that he had made the toilet flush.

And when Srila Prabhupada arrived and when it was time for Srila Prabhupada to respond to the nature, the devotees showed him the toilet and said it is a nice toilet. And Prabhupad in his unassuming way took his lota and went to the fields. He responded to the nature in the field and took his bath in the field. When he came back Srila Prabhupada said,” I enjoy responding to the nature in the nice fresh green grass with the breeze”. So the whole time he was there, he went to the fields to respond to the nature.

Radhanath Swami explains that Srila Prabhupada was teaching the lesson of detachment. We should not be attached to the fruits of even the devotional service we perform.
